Sometimes I feel like I have little ears all over the country, and Katie from Texas is the one responsible for guiding me to A Place Like This. They hail from the Dallas, Texas area, and not going to lie: they're quite good. I have a hard time getting into little local bands sometimes (well, local for Katie, definitely not me).
But right now, I'm currently listening to Never I Will on their myspace page at 12:01 in the morning, and I'm totally rocking out. This song has become a personal favorite of mine. One of those songs that reminds you of summer and makes you want to dance around the room. It's also got backing by this phenomenal sounding female vocalist who goes by the name of Lauren Moore, and she's also on they're song Why I Try. And just to compare them to some other people, they remind me slightly of The Audition and Yellowcard in a way.
This is how I've broken APLT down: they're drummer is pretty good, so the beats are sweet. Catchy lyrics and tunes. Kind of a poppy sound, which only makes them sound that much catchier. Strong vocalist. Should be famous? Oh yeah.
I almost hate this band for being so catchy (is there a synonym for this word?!). So I think you guys should go listen to them and bug them to tour outside of Texas, because I would seriously dig them coming to Michigan.
here's an interview I did with Adrian awhile ago. awhile ago meaning months ago. so some of this information might not be as accurate now, and i really want to apologize to the band for me taking forever to get this up.
Q. who is A Place Like This made up of, and how did you all get together?
A. A Place Like This so far is made up of Adrian Camacho, Johnny Bell, and David Richardson. Filling in for guitar until the permanent position is filled is Branden Neal.....and yes you can come audition kids. We started when drummer Johnny Bell and i met in sophomore year at Lakeview Centennial high school in Garland, we started a band called Seven Day Challenge and that fell through so we started this new and improved A PLACE LIKE THIS!
Q. what can kids expect when they go to an APLT show?
A. I think the biggest thing about our APLT shows are that we have tons of energy, interaction with the crowd, and some surprises which i will not give away but they range from cool dances to sometimes free stuff.
Q. are you in the works of getting an EP or anything together yet?
A. Well our producer Ethan Kaufmann is working on some other projects and since we are not yet signed to any labels we need money to record more songs. So to answer your question yes we are planning on it but it will not be for a while unless we randomly get picked up by a label sometime soon. In the meantime we will have 2 song demos for sale at our shows.
Q. who does most of the song writing, and where does the inspiration come from?
A. Well I think as a band we all do a good amount of writing. The basic song idea is started with me, then David and I will figure out spots where we can cut out or put cool pauses and stuff and then our producer helps us throw on some final touches. As to Lyrics, mostly me but David helps when i get really stuck and to the inspiration part I would have to say things that I have experienced or someone I know has experienced, or things that are just on my mind.
Q. where can kids buy your merch/go to one of your shows?
A. For the most part our merch is sold at shows until we open an online merch store, and as to our shows.....for right now just places in Texas, some upcoming ones are San Antonio, Dallas, possibly Alice, and a few others but we are planning on doing an eastcoast tour sometime in early '08 and we try to make most of our shows all ages because our fan base ranges from around 10 anywhere up to 40, 50, you name it.
Hey the best way for us to be able to come to your city is if we know we will at least get our money in gas so if you want to help us tour faster tell all your friends about us and help us promote!
And since I believe they're myspace keeps getting hacked, go and add them and tell them how fabulous they are. MYSPACE.COM/APLACELIKETHIS
thanks, katie ;)
