Valentine’s Day is today, and people either love it or hate it. Love it because there is finally someone to celebrate with. Hate it because you think it’s a pointless holiday made to fuel the candy/card companies. Or you’re just bitter. Either way, everyone has those love songs that just add to the greatness of the holiday. Here are 11 great and necessary tracks.
1. The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson. This song addresses the major theme and most important part of love: taking someone for who they are!
‘Cause I love the way you call me baby. And you take me the way I am.
2. First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes. I don’t think anyone who has heard this song can disagree with me on this choice.
And you said, “this is the first day of my life. I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you. But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you and I’d probably be happy.
Should they kill me, your love will fill me as warm as the bullets, yeah. I’ll know my purpose, this war was worth this. I won’t let you down.
4. Falling For You - Weezer. Not only is Weezer a classic, but this song is so playful and great, that it had to go on the list. It’s also a good one for those ‘old goats’ with ‘young chicks.’
But I’m shakin’ at your touch, I like you way too much. My baby I’m afraid I’m falling for you. I’d do ’bout anything to get the hell out alive. Or maybe I would rather settle down with you.
5. Charlotte - Air Traffic. This Brit-pop band breaks the mold on the typical love song. With both the energy and the lyrics are not all that conventional.
I’m wasted, I’m face down on the floor can’t take anymore, I gave it all away. Lately I can’t find the eyes, help me realize that I’m in love, I’m in love, I’m in love.
6. In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel. Anyone who has seen Say Anything knows this song. Granted, I’m not sure if this song has the same effect as it does when there is a dashing, young John Cusack holding a boombox over his head, but it’s worth a shot.
In your eyes, the light the heat. In your eyes, I am complete.
7. Brighter Than Sunshine - Aqualung. This song is like sitting down after fifty hours of standing. Like a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day. Really, it’s just refreshing. Affectionate lyrics, crisp and clear sounding piano. Wonderful.
What a feeling in my soul, love burns brighter than sunshine. Let the rain fall I don’t care, I’m yours and suddenly you’re mine.
When every move and each impulse brings clarity, to stay like this is everything you’ll ever need.
9. Reasons to Love You - Meiko. I have a total voice crush on this woman. This song does take the slow song, but it is close to perfection.
I wanna dream away with you tonight, we can go anywhere you would like. I wanna feel how I wanna feel forever.
10. Journey of the Featherless - Cloud Cult. Not exactly a love song, but it is a cute song. I thoroughly enjoy the orchestra at the beginning, and the lyrics are very clever.
I left you a love poem, the best I have written. My favorite words were the ones I couldn’t spell.
11. Melt My Heart to Stone - Adele. Adele is another one of those British gems, and these lyrics are so vulnerable and wonderful, it has to be added. Contributed by BOXeight’s own Chad Wilson.
And I hear your words that I made up, you say my name like there could be an us. I best tidy up my head. I’m the only one in love.
Hope everyone has a pleasant ‘holiday.’ Sorry I couldn’t provide download links, but I really don’t need to get sued.

My fave of the bunch is newcomer Meiko - her whole album - top to bottom - is fantastic. AND it's on-sale at iTunes for like $4.99!
What about the best love song ever written? "I'll Melt With You" by Modern English!
