Troy, Lincoln, and Pomegranates

Troy Doetch (left) and Lincoln Flowers have been writing music and involving themselves in it for most of their lives. They are in a band together called The Pomegranates.

Lincoln found himself involved in it as just ten years old, along with Troy. “All the girls thought I was really cool cause I could play the drums,” said Troy. He’d taken some drum lessons when he was younger and then took a couple of guitar lessons alongside his younger brother, Dylan. Lincoln found himself involved with the guitar at a young age and later took up bass.

Their inspiration comes from just about anything you can name. However, the most recent song that Troy has written was based on a book called Bonjour Tristes, but most of their songs are out there just for fun, which matches their personality.

Lately, they’ve been sticking to their small, hometown coffee house of The Brick, however they’ll be heading out a little further to Crystal Lake, IL. They’d like to move to Chicago to make themselves a name, but not for a while. Troy wants to get a few college classes done before making a move and Lincoln just wants to get out of town as soon as possible.

They couldn’t see themselves doing anything except this. Lincoln jokingly said he’d looked into farming, and then said, “We’ll still end up playing music.” When Troy was younger, he would try to start a band with his brother, but too often, he found that they would butt heads more than creatively agree. “If you search myspace, you’ll find a lot of terrible two song bands, they would be us,” said Troy.

So, Troy moved on and wrote songs for himself. He eventually discovered Lincoln when they were hanging out together one day and a girl that they both had a crush on offered them a pomegranate. This brought them closer and eventually gave them their name, The Pomegranates.

Both of them feel that it’s harder to get experience with music now with the internet. However, both of them know what they want to get out of music. “I want to be able to vent emotion. I want people to feel the way I feel, whether good or bad,” said Lincoln. Troy agreed with that and then added, “I want to make the kind of music that inspires people.” They also feel extremely confident in making a good name for themselves and their music.

Although small-town cafes are gaining popularity with the help of myspace and blogs, Troy and Lincoln still feel as if, in some aspect, they're dying out.

These two have a bright future ahead of them. They are talking about customized pomegranate shirts where you get to pick the color of the shirt and the hairstyle of the pomegranate on the shirt and they’ll make it right on the spot for you. “Pomegranates are pretty visually,” said Lincoln. They said that they’re also thinking about introducing a trumpet player into their duet, making it a trio.
