When Michigan-based band Mason Proper released their debut album There’s a Moth in Your Chest, it was a real hit amongst fans and left big shoes to fill for any future albums. Their new release Olly Oxen Free filled in the shoes, and busted a hole in the toe as well.
The album opener ‘Fog’ does a great job at setting the eerie tone that carries it’s way through the album. Like the actual misty substance, the song rolls through the listener, and lead singer Jonathan Visger’s voice is like the light that pierce’s through it, delivering haunting lyrics such as, “my horoscope said ‘pack your bags’/Running low on hope, I can’t get back.”
Then, my personal favorite, “Lock and Key” is one packed with smart lyrics that will stick in your head for days (Later on, one swore he saw us open the jar/ All the chemicals luminesce in their chests and shine right through/ Kinda like me and you) and heavy bass, including some of the electronic noises that Mason Proper has become partially known for. While a lot of the songs are ambient, ‘Only a Moment’ wakes you up with drum and bass dominating the track with a few soft guitar hooks that manage to creep their way through. Then near the middle of the song, there is the schizophrenic breakdown which happens at least once or twice during a Mason Proper album.
Track after track leaves the listener wondering what exactly will come up next. Each song is loaded with heavy bass and drums, and great guitar hooks. Though the different themes that each song takes on keeps us intrigued and wanting more.
